United Way of Southeastern Connecticut launched a youth program in 2022, Your Voice Counts (YVC), to promote trust and civility in our community. The initiative aims to improve communication, critical thinking, and understanding among high school students. Youth gain skills needed to navigate conversations that often result in divisiveness to help make the world a kinder place, one which will contribute to United Way of Southeastern Connecticut held its first-ever gala benefit event to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center. United for Gemma honored the evolution of the Food Center from 1988 to present-day, as well as founder Gemma Moran, who passed away earlier this year.
The annual Gemma E. Moran Award for Inspiration was presented to James Newman, a member of United Way’s Board of Directors and the MDA-UAW Local 571.
Rodney Butler, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is now accepting applications to its 2023-24 Student United Way program. It is open to high school juniors and seniors from area schools. Applications, available online, are due by Friday, September 29, 2023, and the size is limited to twenty participants.
Student United Way (SUW) is an initiative under United Way’s impact area Thriving Children and Youth. The program engages youth from area schools throughout twelve sessions to learn about philanthropy and the needs New ALICE Report shows pandemic aids temporarily blunted the financial crisis, yet even those supports were not enough.
The ranks of New London County households unable to afford the basics grew by 21% during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a total of 41,172 or 37% of households struggling to afford the basics by 2021, according to a new report from United Way of Southeastern Connecticut and its research partner United For ALICE.
These families, defined as ALICE (Asset Limited, United Way of Southeastern Connecticut will hold its inaugural United for Gemma Benefit Gala on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at the Mashantucket Pequot Research Center and Museum from 5:30-8:30 p.m. to raise funds to support the Gemma Legacy Fund. The Fund will collectively create sustainable support for the ongoing operation of the Food Center program named after its founder Gemma Moran.
This year also marks the 35th anniversary of the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center (Food Center). The Michael’s Dairy, Mitchell College, and United Way of Southeastern Connecticut will be holding a fundraiser on Sunday, September 24, 2023. From Noon – 9 p.m. the proceeds of all sales of sundaes will benefit the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center (Food Center).
The event is being held in memory of Gemma Moran, founder of the Food Center, who passed away at age 99 in May 2023. A special sundae called “the full shelf” will be available, in honor of Moran and the Food Center, indicating the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut offers opportunities that connect volunteers with local agencies in need of support. Volunteer teams and individuals are now being recruited to work on four projects over the next year on Days of Caring. Wondr Nation is the Days of Caring Presenting Sponsor to assist the agencies with costs related to each project.
Days of Caring are large-scale, one-day volunteer projects at nonprofit organizations that create a positive impact in the community and make meaningful, United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is teaming up with the Connecticut Sun to host a United Way Night on Thursday, June 8 at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Sun will take on the Las Vegas Aces, the reigning WNBA champions. United Way will receive $5 for every ticket sold to benefit the organization’s vital network of health and human service programs and initiatives.

The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Foundation recently awarded numerous grants to support 35 programs that address education, economic development, food insecurity, and essential needs in the region.
The mission of the Foundation, a 501(c)3 overseen by a volunteer board with support from the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT, is to enhance and enrich education and economic opportunities, especially for children and families, in United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is seeking proposals for new member agencies to the organization’s Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center (Food Center). The goal is to increase food access to underrepresented populations with high food insecurity rates.
The USDA defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household in order to live an active, healthy life. New London County experiences food insecurity at a rate of 12.2%; the second highest rate of New Capacities, a collective impact project led by United Way of Southeastern Connecticut, has adapted student Career Expo’s for our new world of remote learning and social distancing. Funding amounts are determined nationally by a board chaired by FEMA. In 2017, this funding was effective in New London County by providing 34,194 meals, 1,094 shelter bed nights, 147 households with Eastern CT – The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Foundation has announced the distribution of $107,400 to 38 eastern CT non-profits that will improve the quality of life for thousands of children in the region.
The Foundation raised funds throughout 2017 with fundraisers including the 6th Annual Bowl-a-Thon at High Rollers Luxury Lanes at Foxwoods Resort Casino in April and the 34th Annual Holiday Gala held at Mohegan Sun in December.

Moran United Way/Labor Food Center (Food Center) and Citizens Bank, United Way’s HAM sponsor, ask everyone in America to take action to fight hunger in their community. During Hunger Action Month people can get involved by running a food drive, raising awareness, volunteering, making a donation, and wearing orange, the Nearly 1 in 5 children (or 18.5%) in New London County are food insecure. That means they don’t know when or where their next meal will come from. During the summer, even more children will be facing hunger because when school lunches end, lunch ends altogether. And as the demand for food increases, donations to food banks tend to drop in the summertime.
